A short online course on managing gaming behaviour in autistic children, youngsters and adults with practical tips for helping them to enjoy gaming without their gaming becoming the sole source of unwinding. Video + handouts + practical checklist.
Description
For many children and youngsters, gaming is their favourite freetime activity. As a flow-activity, gaming can contribute to well-being. But it is also a hedonic activity and can become something addictive, especially if gaming is the only way the autistic person has to unwind or relax. Many games are characterized by a compulsive loop.
In this online course, I will explain this compulsive loop but also invite you to think of the different functions gaming can have for an autistic person. Knowing these functions is important if we want to help the autistic person to manage their gaming behaviour, while making sure that the needs served by gaming are still met by alternatives.
I also explain how to manage gaming and how we can gamify other activities, so that the autistic person has enough ‘gaming’ experiences in life.
The online course contains a video, the handouts of the slides shown in the presentation and a very practical checklist for managing gaming behaviour.
